This week is World Breastfeeding Week.
As Little Bean Baby Photography makes the newborn baby the star of the show, it is only for those few family shots at the end of a photoshoot that mothers are invited in front of the camera lens. The focus is always on the brand new, snuggly baby girl or boy.
With the rise in popularity of artistic wedding, maternity, and newborn photography, we have been asking the question – why shouldn’t breastfeeding be celebrated in the same way? The act of nurturing and nourishing a newborn baby deserves the same reverence, whether you breast or bottle feed. And why shouldn’t these photographs also capture the love that passes from mother to baby too?
The styled nature of the shoot required a team of professionals to be a part of the experience, assisting in set-up and design. So, the photoshoot felt a lot more developed and busy than the usual, very stripped-back, set up we have in the barn for baby shoots; there was, on the whole, a bustle of activity, apart from in those quiet moments just before the shutter was clicked. It was wonderful to see how each of my mothers interacted with their babies and settled into the set and the pose. I wanted to keep everything as natural as I could, so that many of the photographs feel as if the viewer has just dropped in on a private, intimate moment between mother and child.
The aim was to say all this with just a few photographs, so that the ‘natural’ styling became simply a means of emphasising the relationship that sits at the centre of each; and to put forward an argument for why many more photographers should try out this type of photography.
